With 16 percent of the global population living with some form of disability, the scarcity of employment opportunities for these individuals remains a significant global challenge. Previously in the Maldives, support for persons with disabilities was largely limited to financial subsidies. However, the current administration has initiated efforts to implement comprehensive and sustainable solutions to address these systemic issues.
The policy of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is centered on ensuring that persons with disabilities are not marginalized, but rather integrated as active participants in national development. To this end, over 300 job opportunities have already been facilitated within state-owned enterprises and the civil service. Furthermore, the government has committed to making public buildings and parks accessible and has decided to allocate special quotas for persons with disabilities in social housing projects.
In the field of education, progress is being made to establish inclusive classrooms in all schools across the Maldives and to train specialized SEN (Special Educational Needs) teachers. Additionally, the Maldives Paralympic Committee has been granted legal empowerment to enhance sporting opportunities, and specialized loan schemes have been introduced for those aspiring to start their own businesses. The overarching objective of these initiatives is to empower persons with disabilities to lead dignified and self-sufficient lives, ultimately building a compassionate and inclusive society for all.
