Syrian Forces Build Up Near Kurdish-Controlled Areas

The Syrian government has begun mobilizing its military forces toward Kurdish-controlled regions in the north and east of the country, in a strategic move aimed at pressuring Kurdish leadership to engage in negotiations and offer concessions.

Following the sudden collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in late 2024, the successor administration led by Ahmed al-Sharaa has focused on national unification. Al-Sharaa seeks to integrate Kurdish military and civil institutions into the central state apparatus. Despite prolonged discussions on this matter, significant progress has remained elusive. With the timeframe for negotiations having expired, tensions have escalated; last week, clashes erupted between Kurdish fighters and the military in Aleppo, resulting in the withdrawal of some Kurdish units from the area.

To further compel a withdrawal from these Kurdish-held territories, the Syrian military is currently concentrating troops in Aleppo and Deir ez-Zor. If Kurdish authorities continue to resist further negotiations despite this buildup, there is a heightened possibility that the military may launch targeted strikes in these regions.

Kurdish leaders have condemned the government’s military mobilization, expressing grave concern over the potential consequences of such escalations. They have reiterated their preference for a diplomatic resolution through internationally mediated dialogue.
