The government of Greenland has stated that the protection of the Western defense alliance, NATO, is vital in safeguarding its independence.
Since 2019, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring Greenland and bringing it under American sovereignty, citing its strategic defense importance to the United States.
In a statement condemning any efforts toward American annexation, the Greenlandic government emphasized that protecting Greenland is an obligation for all NATO member states, including the U.S. The statement further noted that as a territory of Denmark, Greenland is a member of NATO, just as Denmark is.
Andrius Kubilius, the European Union’s Defense Commissioner, has warned that any attempt by the United States to occupy Greenland could lead to the dissolution of the NATO alliance.
Trump’s renewed rhetoric regarding the need to secure Greenland before it falls under the influence of China or Russia comes at a time of significant geopolitical tension. This follows U.S. military action in Venezuela, where President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were detained and taken out of the country, with Trump declaring that the U.S. would take charge of Venezuela’s administration.
While Trump’s advisors suggest that the most straightforward way to bring Greenland under U.S. control without conflict would be to purchase it from Denmark, both Greenland and Denmark have firmly rejected this proposal. Both governments have repeatedly maintained that Greenland is not for sale.
