Civil Court Case Clearance Rate Increases by 23% Last Year

The Civil Court of the Maldives has recorded a 23% increase in the number of cases resolved in 2025 compared to the previous year.

The court recently publicized its official statistics detailing the number of cases filed and concluded over the past year.

According to the figures released by the Civil Court, a total of 5,680 cases were registered last year, representing a 10.46% increase compared to the 5,142 cases registered in 2024.

Regarding case disposal, the court successfully concluded 6,718 cases last year. This is a significant rise of 23.68% compared to 2024, during which 5,432 cases were resolved.

Furthermore, the court shared data regarding procedural decisions and rulings on jurisdiction. In this category, 126 decisions were made last year, compared to 135 in 2024.

The statistics also highlight a notable increase in rulings regarding interlocutory and court orders. In 2025, the court issued 166 such rulings, which is an increase of 63 cases compared to the 103 rulings issued in 2024.

The Civil Court is a Superior Court established under the Judicature Act of the Maldives, ratified on October 21, 2010. The court holds first-instance jurisdiction over all civil matters, with the exception of family law cases. Prior to the establishment of the Civil Court, such matters were presided over by the Civil Court formed on August 1, 1997. Additionally, a division of the Civil Court was established in Hulhumale’ on April 13, 2016, following a resolution by the Supreme Court of the Maldives.
