State Minister for Homeland Security and Technology, Ahmed Siddiq, has announced that a substantial shift and visible progress in the government’s efforts to combat drug abuse will be evident within this year. Noting that an estimated 10,000 individuals in the Maldives are affected by substance abuse—a significant figure relative to the total population—he emphasized that the President has accorded the highest priority to resolving this crisis.

Furthermore, Siddiq highlighted the extensive state investment dedicated to curbing drug trafficking and providing comprehensive rehabilitation to facilitate the successful reintegration of recovering individuals into society. Currently, rehabilitation centers are operational across nine regions of the Maldives. Efforts are now underway to establish additional centers in more islands while simultaneously strengthening the treatment framework through the integration of educational and vocational training programs.
