
Latest statistics reveal that the state collected over MVR 3.8 billion in Departure Tax and Airport Development Fee (ADF) during the past year. This marks a significant increase of MVR 1.5 billion compared to the previous year.
Departure Tax is levied on all passengers departing from any airport in the Maldives. This tax was officially introduced on January 1, 2022. Similarly, the Airport Development Fee is a charge applicable to every passenger departing the Maldives through Velana International Airport.
According to data released by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), the revenue generated from Departure Tax in 2025 amounted to MVR 1.9 billion, compared to MVR 1.1 billion in 2024.
Furthermore, the state received MVR 1.9 billion as Airport Development Fee in 2025, which is an increase from the MVR 1.2 billion collected in 2024.
The total combined revenue from both Departure Tax and Airport Development Fee for the year 2025 reached MVR 3.8 billion. When compared to the MVR 2.3 billion earned in 2024, this represents a substantial growth of 65.7%, as per MIRA’s statistics.

MIRA’s report attributes the rise in revenue to the increase in tourist arrivals throughout 2025. Statistics show that the Maldives welcomed 2.2 million tourists during the year 2025.
