The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has characterized the recent amendments to the Decentralization Act as a pivotal measure in mitigating corruption and preventing the exploitation of state resources during election periods.

The Commission highlighted that, historically, there has been a high prevalence of complaints involving the misuse of council authority and public assets for undue political advantage. Such practices typically included strategic recruitment and the leasing of land in the lead-up to elections. However, under the new legislative framework implemented last year, councils are now mandated to adhere to specific protocols regarding staff recruitment, land administration, and the commencement of new projects during their final year in office. These regulations are expected to significantly reduce instances of administrative malpractice.

Furthermore, the ACC informed that they are currently collaborating with the Elections Commission to conduct public awareness initiatives regarding electoral offenses, in preparation for the upcoming Local Council Elections.
