The Elections Commission (EC) is fully prepared to conduct a public referendum alongside the Local Council Elections if mandated, stated the Commission’s President, Mohamed Zahid. He made these remarks regarding the possibility of a referendum required for constitutional amendments aimed at synchronizing presidential and parliamentary elections.
According to the law, a public referendum can only be held based on a resolution passed by the People’s Majlis or a decree issued by the President. Once such a decision is officially reached, the vote must be conducted within a three-month period. The Elections Commission highlighted that if such a legal obligation arises, the institution will complete all necessary administrative and technical preparations. Public referendums serve as a vital instrument for gauging citizen opinion on matters of national significance and proposed amendments to key provisions of the Constitution.
