Under the RasmalĂ© land reclamation project, 56 hectares of land have been successfully reclaimed at “Site A.” The reclamation operations for this specific site commenced on December 1, 2023.

The Rasmalé project is the most ambitious initiative launched by the government to provide a permanent solution to the long-standing housing crisis in the Greater Malé Region.

The overall scope of the project involves the reclamation of 1,009 hectares of land, divided into 12 distinct sectors. To expedite the progress, additional dredgers have been deployed to the site. Within this framework, Site A is designated to have a total of 138 hectares of land reclaimed.

According to the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), which is currently spearheading the project, 56 hectares of the targeted 138 hectares at Site A have been completed so far. Since the work began in December, the reclamation at this site has been progressing at an average rate of 1.5 hectares per day.

To further accelerate the RasmalĂ© reclamation process, the Cristobal Colon—recognized as the world’s largest dredger—is currently in operation. The project is being carried out through the collaborative efforts of MACL, Sri Lanka’s Capital Marine and Civil Construction, India’s Mohan Mutha, and China Harbour Engineering. The government’s objective is to complete the entire reclamation phase of RasmalĂ© by the end of March.

The government has further stated that efforts are underway to recruit international consultants to develop the Rasmalé Master Plan alongside the reclamation work. Additionally, preparations are being made to open housing applications for individuals interested in securing residency in Rasmalé.
