Parliament has commenced debates on a proposed amendment to the Penal Code aimed at criminalizing gambling, in response to its increasing prevalence in the Maldives. The members sponsoring the bill highlighted that the surge in online gambling among the youth leads to a decline in national productivity and results in significant economic and social repercussions.
Members emphasized that addressing the challenges surrounding such transactions within the banking system and imposing stringent penalties on those who promote gambling are vital steps toward safeguarding future generations. Furthermore, they underscored the importance of providing relevant authorities with the necessary resources to ensure the effective enforcement of the law.
