The government has submitted a bill to the Parliament proposing an amendment to the Constitution to hold presidential and parliamentary elections concurrently. The primary objectives of this bill are to reduce state expenditure and alleviate the logistical challenges and inconveniences faced by the public during election periods.
Under this proposed change, the parliamentary term cycle will be adjusted, stipulating that a new term of the Parliament shall commence on the 1st of December every five years. Consequently, the term of the current 20th Parliament will be shortened to conclude by the end of 2028.
This initiative, which is also supported by the Elections Commission, is considered a significant step toward strengthening the electoral system and enhancing voter participation.
