53% of the Maldives’ Population Projected to Reside in Malé within the Next 36 Years

According to the latest population projection report by the Maldives Bureau of Statistics, the Maldives is set to undergo a significant demographic shift over the next 36 years. It is estimated that by the year 2062, 53% of the country’s total population will be concentrated in Malé, while the population in the atolls is expected to continue its decline.

The report indicates that the total population of the Maldives is projected to reach 678,024 during this period, a growth primarily driven by an increase in the number of foreign nationals. Specifically, 59% of the Maldivian citizen population is expected to reside in the capital, with only six atolls projected to maintain a population of over 10,000. Furthermore, the report highlights a substantial rise in the expatriate population across various regions, most notably in Vaavu Atoll and Addu City.
