The year 2025 has been a milestone year for the surfing community in the Maldives, marked by significant advancements and achievements. According to the Maldives Surfing Association (MSA), the caliber of Maldivian athletes within the Asian region has seen a substantial elevation. Among the most notable accomplishments of the past year were the historic qualification of Maldivian female surfers for the Asian Games and the attainment of a bronze medal in the junior category at the Asian Surfing Championship.

Furthermore, concerted efforts to promote the sport at the grassroots level led to the introduction of a women’s category in the National Junior Surfing Championship, drawing participants from numerous islands across the archipelago. The surfing community received a significant boost from government initiatives, including an increase in athlete allowances, the commencement of salaries for female athletes, and the introduction of a specialized insurance scheme catering to sports-related injuries.

With ongoing efforts to secure high-level training opportunities in Japan for the upcoming Asian Games and plans to develop a dedicated surfing stadium in Male’, the outlook for Maldivian surfing remains exceptionally promising in the year ahead.
