President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that priority will be given to young individuals working in resorts near specific islands for housing projects implemented in those islands. The President stated that a significant challenge hindering youth empowerment is the scarcity of adequate housing.

Speaking about various issues raised by young people during the “Youth Coffee with President” session, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu highlighted that a major challenge for youth working in the tourism sector is the necessity to live in resorts, often far from their families. Therefore, he emphasized that providing housing in islands close to these resorts would offer young people the opportunity to work while remaining near their families.

“One key aspect, in this regard, is housing. The government is strongly prioritizing and seeking to provide housing for young individuals working in the tourism sector. We plan to implement housing projects in large population centers located near resorts or designated tourism zones. This initiative will primarily address the issue of enabling young people to secure housing close to their families,” the President remarked.

Referring to the projects for over 800 housing units being developed across various islands, the President stated that a specific percentage of these flats would be allocated exclusively to individuals working in the tourism sector. “When flats are distributed from these housing units, we are earmarking a certain percentage for those working in the tourism industry. We will stipulate conditions that prioritize young people within this allocation,” President Muizzu confirmed.

Beyond the tourism sector, the President also assured that young individuals working in the fisheries sector, as well as young couples starting new families, would receive priority in housing projects. He further mentioned that this policy would be applied not only in island projects but also in schemes implemented within the Malé region. President Muizzu reiterated that housing is the biggest obstacle to youth empowerment, and therefore, the government’s objective is to expand housing projects throughout the Maldives, rather than solely focusing on the Malé region. He concluded by stating that this approach would pave the way for young people to thrive in their home islands or close to their families.
