President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that 56 businesses operated by foreigners have been shut down as part of the Ministry of Economic Development’s ongoing efforts to curb illegal business activities by expatriates. The President made this statement while addressing residents of Hulhumalé Phase 1 at an official event.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu highlighted that the issue of expatriates engaging in irregular business practices has become a significant concern, noting that it is also a major worry for the general public. He further emphasized that 56 businesses were closed down in the past three weeks, indicating the special priority given to this matter.

“Many more initiatives are underway. We are taking steps to improve matters in line with the pulse and sentiments of the people, striving to meet their expectations,” the President stated.

To address the widespread issue of expatriates engaging in illegal business activities, a special task force named the “National Taskforce on Combating Illegal Expatriate Operations and Businesses” has been established. This task force comprises the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, and government enforcement agencies including the Maldives Police Service and Maldives Immigration. The task force is currently actively identifying and taking action against businesses believed to be operating illegally across the Maldives.
