President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that 83 massage parlors have been closed since December 9th, as part of an initiative to shut down these establishments following widespread public concern. Speaking at a meeting with residents of Hulhumalé Phase 1, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu highlighted that the proliferation of massage parlors represents a major social issue impacting the entire capital city, Malé.

The President further elaborated that following public consultations and taking into account the concerns raised by citizens, a dedicated effort was launched to inspect and evaluate massage parlors, leading to these closures. He reiterated that 83 massage parlors have been closed since December 9th.

“A review of historical data indicates that such a high number of closures has never been recorded in the Maldives’ history. Not even half of this number has ever been shut down previously. There have always been warnings or some form of action taken, but never actual closures,” the President stated.

President Muizzu also mentioned that foreign nationals operating in these massage parlors are being arrested, and the process of their deportation is currently underway. Emphasizing the government’s commitment to implementing positive changes in consultation with the public, the President noted that 56 businesses have been closed over the past three weeks to curb foreign involvement in local commerce.
