The service for printing and issuing Maldivian National Identity Cards has officially commenced in Sri Lanka.

Efforts to provide ID card printing and issuance services closer to citizens began in November of last year. The Department of National Registration (DNR) stated that the launch of ID card printing services by the Maldivian High Commission in Sri Lanka will significantly expedite the process for Maldivian citizens residing in that country to obtain their national identity cards.

The government is actively working to establish ID card services in countries frequently visited by Maldivians. Sri Lanka marks the second nation where Maldivian ID card services are available outside of the Maldives. Malaysia was the first country to offer these services internationally, and the government is currently making preparations to launch this service in the United Kingdom as well.

Furthermore, the project to extend ID card printing and issuance services, along with passport services, to all atolls across the Maldives has been successfully completed. This significant milestone was achieved three months ahead of the initially set deadline.

Bringing services closer to citizens through a decentralized approach is a crucial policy given special priority by the government. Ensuring that citizens can fulfill their essential needs within their own islands, thereby eliminating the burden of incurring significant expenses and traveling to Malé for every matter, is among the key objectives of the President.
