On the occasion of International Anti-Corruption Day, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu affirmed that the Maldives is a nation that places significant emphasis on transparency, accountability, and integrity in building its future. Emphasizing the nation’s dedication to these principles, the President highlighted the Maldives’ accession to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) in 2007.
The President stated that systemic corruption weakens the rule of law, impedes sustainable development, and infringes upon the rights of citizens. He therefore assured that his government will not tolerate corruption and will actively combat the threats of corruption and malfeasance. Among the measures the government will take against corruption are the “Maldives 2.0” Digital Transformation Project and asset recovery initiatives stemming from amendments to the Penal Code. Furthermore, these efforts include the introduction of a National Anti-Corruption Plan, a 20-year National Development Plan, and the “Himmi” Corruption Risk Self-Assessment Toolkit. The establishment of a dedicated Anti-Corruption Academy to provide trained professional staff to government institutions is also part of these endeavors.
The President underscored the essential role of civil society organizations, international partnerships, as well as individuals and private entities in the fight against corruption. Concluding his message, the President affirmed that trustworthiness, sincerity, and upholding transparent principles are collective duties for all citizens. He further assured that this government is committed to strengthening integrity and democratic governance, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring equitable justice.
International Anti-Corruption Day is observed annually on December 9th, commemorating the adoption of UNCAC by the UN General Assembly in 2003.
