President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu today ratified amendments to the law which aim to reduce the office expenses previously provided to former presidents and to grant benefits to former vice presidents. This bill was passed by the People’s Majlis on December 1, 2025. The primary objective of these amendments is to define the security and benefits provided to individuals who have served as President and Vice President of the Republic, and to stipulate the principles for their provision. Among the significant changes introduced to the law are the reduction of office operational expenses previously extended to former presidents, and the stipulation that such benefits will be suspended if they are elected for a second term or if they hold another state position. Furthermore, it has been specified that providing security during the period they reside abroad is not mandatory.
Additionally, in accordance with the Constitution, individuals who have served as Vice President during a five-year presidential term will now also receive benefits. These benefits include a monthly financial allowance of MVR 30,000 and arrangements for healthcare services, both domestically and internationally, at the state’s expense. It has also been stipulated that if any president or vice president is convicted by a court for a criminal offense committed while in office, neither they nor their spouse will be entitled to any benefits or security under this law.
With the President’s ratification of this bill and its publication in the Government Gazette of the Maldives, the law has now come into effect.
