
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu participated in the ‘High-Level Briefing on Private Capital Mobilisation’, organised under the initiative of His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom. This meeting was arranged by the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI), an organisation founded by King Charles III. Senior officials from international development banks (MDBs) and private finance institutions attended the meeting.
The primary objective of this meeting was to accelerate the mobilisation of private finance through MDBs, to support countries in their sustainable development efforts. During the meeting, the President participated in discussions concerning the advancement of “Debt-for-Climate” and “Debt-for-Nature” initiatives, and enhancing collaboration among environmentally friendly private finance institutions. In this regard, the President highlighted the challenges faced by the Maldives and other small island developing states (SIDS), and their financial assistance needs, proposing ways to find solutions for these issues.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to the United Kingdom was by invitation from His Majesty King Charles III. During this visit, the Maldives was afforded the opportunity to further amplify its voice on the international stage, advocating for the provision of climate-resilient, fair, and sustainable financial assistance, and for ensuring that small island nations like the Maldives fully benefit from such aid. This meeting of the Sustainable Markets Initiative is an important global effort to align government objectives with private sector investments.
