Fenaka Corporation’s Managing Director, Mohamed Najaah, has announced that efforts are underway to increase Addu City’s power capacity to 17 megawatts before the upcoming month of Ramadan. This government is actively working to resolve Addu City’s electricity problems. Speaking at the Parliament’s State Owned Enterprise Committee, Fenaka’s Managing Director Mohamed Najaah stated that Addu’s power issue has existed long before the current government came into power. He added that the problem persists today because the previous government did not undertake adequate efforts to resolve it.
Furthermore, Najaah stated that, according to documents, 14 generators were brought to Addu between 2019 and 2023, but out of these, all but two were found to be faulty. He mentioned that the current government has spent MVR 16 million to repair these generators. He also noted that this government has brought 8 generators to Addu, increasing the power capacity to 12 megawatts, and these generators have not experienced any issues or shutdowns to date.
“For this Ramadan, we are installing an additional 1.8-megawatt generator. As of today, we have already installed 12 megawatts. With the addition of this 1.8-megawatt generator, we will be able to generate approximately 13 to 14 megawatts. We are also proceeding with efforts to repair the maximum number of generators from those that were faulty and can be fixed. The necessary materials and spares are expected to arrive within the next month, and once work begins, God willing, we are aiming to fix all repairable units and bring approximately 16 to 17 megawatts into the system,” Najaah stated.
Najaah affirmed that Fenaka is doing everything possible to resolve Addu’s power issue. He noted that the current peak load in Addu is 13 megawatts. Therefore, he expects that the additional generator brought for Ramadan will be sufficient to handle the load. Fenaka stated that they are working to bring a permanent solution to Addu’s power problem. In this regard, Fenaka is working to transition Addu’s power generation to medium-speed power generators, with plans to install 5 generators of 6 megawatts each, totaling 30 megawatts of electricity.
Fenaka also stated that their technical teams would visit Addu within the next two weeks to commence this project. The company noted that the aim is to complete this work within one and a half years.
