The Prosecutor General’s Office has decided not to proceed with the charges filed against Aishath Azima Shakoor, the former Legal Affairs Minister at the President’s Office. The PGO stated that charges of facilitating money laundering and providing false information to an official authority were filed at the Criminal Court on February 17, 2019, against M. Aasthaana, Aishath Azima Shakoor, who was then serving as the Legal Affairs Minister at the President’s Office, in connection with the MMPRC corruption scandal that occurred in 2015.

The PGO further stated that Aishath Azima Shakoor had requested a review of these charges. Since the Supreme Court of the Maldives has ruled that the primary perpetrator of the money laundering offense facilitated by Azima Shakoor’s alleged actions was not convicted, the PGO does not see a public interest in further pursuing the charges against her, and has therefore decided not to proceed with them.
