An agreement has been signed between the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) regarding the construction of sports complexes in Aa. Ukulhas and Aa. Rasdhoo. The initiation of these two projects was handed over to MACL during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s trip to Ari Atoll North. The agreement for the Ukulhas and Rasdhoo Sports Complex projects was signed by the Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Abdullah Rafiu, and MACL’s Managing Director, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed. These sports complexes, which will accommodate multiple sports, are part of the government’s planned projects to establish sports infrastructure and promote sports development, in addition to building a healthy and fit society.
Both islands have been designated by the government for the establishment of outdoor gyms, fitness and recreation centers, and various sports facilities. Developing indoor sports complexes across different regions of the country is a key objective of the government. The government is working to expand sports throughout the Maldives and establish international standard facilities in the atolls as well. This is also aimed at paving the way for national-level elite athletes to emerge from the atolls.
In addition to establishing sports complexes, the government states that special emphasis is being given to setting up handball, football, and other sports facilities on the islands.
