
The land reclamation and airport development project in AA. Mathiveri has been handed over to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). This task was assigned to MACL during a meeting with the people of Mathiveri, as part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing trip to AA. Atoll. The agreement for this project was signed by State Minister Hussain Imran on behalf of the Ministry of Finance, and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed on behalf of MACL.
The government announced a search for a developer to build an airport in Mathiveri on a “cross-subsidy” basis in May of this year. The project includes the development of a 1500-meter long, 30-meter wide runway, a taxiway and apron, a passenger terminal, a fire station, and the development of airport service roads. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had previously stated that the construction of AA. Mathiveri Airport was among the new projects to be initiated this year. The President said that building an airport in Mathiveri would be economically viable. He stated that the airport would open new doors for the tourism sector and bring economic benefits.
In his speech during the meeting with the people of Mathiveri, the President said that MACL would carry out the land reclamation and airport work in Mathiveri through its own investments. The President noted that 26.5 hectares of land would be reclaimed from the island, including the airport development, and said that this land could be used for housing projects and other initiatives.
