
Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zareer has stated that approximately 370 beds have been added to date to address prison overcrowding, with a target to increase this number to 500 within the current term. While work is underway to construct a new 140-person unit in Hulhumalé to expand capacity, the Commissioner highlighted the current lack of a system to segregate inmates based on age and the nature of their crimes. To seek a permanent solution to these issues, the government has decided to develop a central prison in Uthuru Thila Falhu under the “One Prison Concept.
