U.S. President Donald Trump has once again given Russia a deadline to take decisive steps to end the war against Ukraine. The Russia-Ukraine war began on February 24, 2022. Russia initially attacked Ukraine. Trump said he has given Russia a 10 or 12-day deadline to end the war. He added that if Russia does not comply, he will take further measures against the country. Among the measures Trump threatened to take include imposing sanctions on Russia as well as countries that buy Russian goods.
Speaking during a visit to Scotland to meet with EU member state leaders, Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with President Vladimir Putin’s actions. Trump had given a 50-day deadline in early July to end the war. However, Trump said he decided to shorten the deadline due to his dissatisfaction with Putin. “I’m going to set a new deadline. From today, about 10 or 12 days. There’s no point in waiting… We don’t see any progress,” Trump said, speaking to reporters alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The Kremlin, Russia’s presidential office, has not commented on Trump’s new threat. However, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has responded to Trump’s threats. He said that the likelihood of a war involving the United States is increasing due to America’s actions. “Every new threat is a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but [Trump’s] own country,” he said in a post on X. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed Trump’s warning. “At the right moment, POTUS [the U.S. President] has clarified policy and determination, showing that much can be corrected by working together for peace. I appreciate President Trump’s emphasis on stopping this war and saving many lives,” Zelenskyy said in a post on X. He also said that Ukraine supports the United States taking further measures against Russia.
Trump has also expressed dissatisfaction with Zelenskyy. However, he said he has no interest in further consultations with Putin. Trump also said that if Putin continues to refuse to act as he wants, he has decided to impose additional sanctions on Russia and increase tariffs or import duties on goods imported from Russia to the United States as punishment.
