The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has decided to form a special committee to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Maldivian football. In the first Executive Committee meeting held by the newly appointed President Ahmed Thoriq (Tom) on Saturday, it was decided to give clubs the opportunity to submit names for this committee. The Golden Jubilee of Maldivian football was celebrated in 2000. This was marked by a special football tournament inviting regional countries. The first football tournament in the Maldives was held in 1947. However, various forms of tournaments were held even before that. But this year marks the 75th anniversary of official football being played in the Maldives, counting from when the national football tournament began to be held regularly with official colors.

While FAM has decided to form a committee to celebrate this milestone grandly, Maldivian football has achieved many regional successes over the past period. This includes winning the SAFF Championship in 2008 and 2018. In addition, it has also been decided to form committees for futsal and beach soccer.
