Umair retires from playing after being elected to FAM Executive Committee

Mohamed Umair, the famous football player, has retired from playing after being elected to the Executive Committee of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM). After announcing his retirement, he told PSM News that he is retiring from playing football to take up his position in FAM’s Executive Committee. He said that the period he spent playing from youth ranks to the national level was a very happy journey. Umair also expressed gratitude to all the coaches and others who helped him throughout his career. He stated that under his new responsibility, he will now work towards developing young players. Umair said this is not an end, but a new beginning.

“This is not an end, but a beginning to serve football in a different way,” Umair said. He stated that with this new responsibility, during his term, he will work to bring back the enthusiasm for football, revive the love for Maldivian football, and bring back and strengthen competitiveness. Umair, who was part of the team that won the SAFF Championship for Maldives in 2008 with an excellent performance in the national team, last played for Victory Sports Club. He joined that club in May of this year.

Umair said he started his career with an opportunity provided by former football player Liruham Saeed. He noted that afterwards, he got the chance to represent the country in football and gained a lot of experience in the Under-16 national team under Marhoom Ihsan Abdul Ghanee (Santhey) and Mohamed Shiyaz (Mohan). He also mentioned learning a lot from Ahmed Mausoof (Maattey) and Ali Suzain. Umair, who has played for Victory, VB, New Radiant, Valencia, Green Streets, and Maziya, has thanked all the clubs.
