India assists in sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture sector

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources of Maldives and the Department of Fisheries under India’s Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying to enhance cooperation in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. The agreement was signed by Ahmed Shiyam, Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, on behalf of the Maldivian government, and Dr. S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, on behalf of the Indian government.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources stated that the main objectives of this MoU are to promote sustainable pelagic fisheries, strengthen sustainable resource management, and advance the aquaculture sector. It also aims to promote eco-friendly fishing tourism, and support innovative initiatives and scientific research in both countries. Additionally, the agreement includes developing value chains, providing training, collaborating on research to enhance capabilities in the fisheries sector, increasing private sector participation in the Maldivian mariculture sector, and facilitating investment opportunities.

The ministry said this MoU will also assist in both countries’ efforts to use fishery resources sustainably and protect the environment. They added that the exchange of information and experiences between the two countries will facilitate finding solutions to challenges in the fisheries sector. Furthermore, the ministry expressed hope that this agreement will strengthen the relationship between the Maldives and India in the fisheries sector, promote the fishing industry in both countries, and lead to beneficial results and sustainable development in this field.
