First Time at the New Terminal: It’s a Wonder!

Journalists who visited the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) say they were amazed by its beauty and height. As this terminal nears completion after nearly 9 years of work, it is prepared to serve 7.5 million passengers annually. This project is a crucial one that will bring revolutionary changes to the country’s economy and the progress of its people. The facade ( (exterior appearance) and interior design of the terminal incorporate patterns from the seal found on the minaret of the Male’ Friday Mosque.

The new terminal is equipped with 47 check-in counters, an Aviation Security Command, and immigration counters. To facilitate passengers, there will be duty-free shops and food outlets. The boarding gate area includes 12 aero bridges and 12 boarding gates (6 for arrivals, 6 for departures). Inside the terminal, directional signs and TV screens have been installed, with staff available to assist. The arrival area will feature a view of Male’s waterfront. The luggage belt area is more spacious than the current terminal, set up with 6 belts. There is also a dedicated space for customs posts and resort representatives.

Fathimath Shahida stated that extensive Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) trials are underway. The purpose of these trials is to train staff and ensure that services can be provided to passengers without any difficulties. The terminal is expected to open on the 26th of this month, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence. Work on the terminal is progressing 24 hours a day in two shifts. This is a place that will change the history of the Maldives and make Maldivians proud.
