President Meets with All-Party Parliamentary Group Members

The President, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has participated in a meeting with the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) comprising members of the UK and Maldives parliaments. During this meeting, light was shed on the long-standing close relationship between the Maldives and the United Kingdom over the past 60 years. In her opening remarks, APPG Co-Chair MP Yasmin Qureshi highlighted the responsibility of international bodies in addressing the challenges faced by developing small island nations, as well as the financial and technical assistance and international cooperation that should be provided to such countries.

In his speech at the meeting, the President stated that the strong relationship between the two countries is based on respect and principles, and that the Maldives will prioritize further strengthening these ties. The President also expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by the UK in strengthening the Maldives’ justice sector, democracy, climate change resilience, defense sector, and capacity building in these areas.

Furthermore, he touched upon the educational and cultural connections established between the two countries. In his speech, the President also expressed full confidence in the role played by the APPG in further strengthening relations between the two countries. Following the opening remarks, representatives from both countries engaged in discussions on ways to further enhance ties in key areas.
