
Finance Minister Moosa Zameer has stated that they are closely monitoring the ongoing unrest in the Middle East and its impact on the Maldivian economy. In a tweet, Zameer said that they are closely observing the situation to address oil prices, food security in the Maldives, and necessary financial adjustments.
The United States entered the ongoing war between Iran and Israel practically last Sunday. In retaliation for the US attack on Iran, the country attacked a US military base in Qatar last night. Consequently, countries like Qatar, UAE, and Saudi Arabia temporarily closed their airspace and suspended flights. However, after assessing the situation, Qatar and UAE have resumed flights again.
Minister Zameer said that under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, they are monitoring and analyzing foreign oil and trade transaction prices in collaboration with relevant agencies. He also stated that after assessing the situation, they will take necessary measures to minimize losses. In addition to Zameer, Tourism Minister Ibrahim Thoriq has also said that they are analyzing the situation and identifying potential damages to the tourism sector.
When flights to countries like Qatar and UAE were briefly suspended last night, it affected the airlines that carry the most tourists to the Maldives from that region. Particularly, Qatar Airways and Emirates bring the most tourists from European destinations.
