Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Abdullah Rafiu has stated that the Olympic-sized swimming pool currently being established in the Maldives will become an important asset for sports tourism.
Minister Rafiu said he has no doubt that neighboring countries will use the swimming pool for training for various competitions in the future. He also said that this would become a world-class facility available to the Maldives and neighboring countries.
“So, the combination of the Maldivian environment and a facility of this caliber will help us provide these resources to nearby countries as well as ourselves,” Rafiu said. The Minister said he believes that the work needed to promote tourism through sports will be greatly expanded through this.
The Maldives Swimming Association has previously revealed that Maldivian swimmers are working towards qualifying for the 2028 Olympics in the United States. This pool will be an important resource for achieving that goal. The association’s aim is to hold the national competition in the new pool in November this year.
