The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has said that work is underway to introduce an e-invoice system to address the difficulties currently faced by taxpayers within the tax system.

MIRA has been working to digitalize its services and make it easier for taxpayers to pay taxes. Speaking on PSM News’ ‘Raajje Miadhu’ program, Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation Fathimath Amiza said that one of the most important tasks MIRA is currently undertaking is the work of digitalizing all operations. The Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation also said that automated digitalization is recognized by many countries around the world as the best and easiest way to run the system, and MIRA is also working to bring such a system. “We have now started work on introducing and implementing an e-invoice system through a digital roadmap. When this system is introduced, some of the problems currently faced by taxpayers will be solved. Then the speed of our work will be seen. It will be very easy for both parties to arrange the work,” Amiza said.

As part of digitalizing MIRA’s services, changes are being made to MIRA’s online services. One of the most recent changes is allowing those who need to make multiple payments to make payments simultaneously. Previously, these parties had to pay for each part separately. In addition, changes have recently been made to allow online registration for GST. MIRA has noted that providing ease in tax payment increases the amount of tax paid. The authority has also appealed for attention to be paid to submitting tax returns in advance with the concessions given by MIRA.
