Under the Maldivian Government’s “Maldives First” foreign policy, which seeks to strengthen bilateral ties with all nations—excluding Israel—on a basis of equality, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s official visit to Malaysia marks a significant milestone. During high-level discussions with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, both leaders deliberated on enhancing visa facilitation and fostering cooperation in digital and technological sectors. Furthermore, four key agreements were signed, spanning the fields of healthcare, sports, education, and diplomatic training.
In addition to these diplomatic engagements, the President highlighted lucrative investment opportunities in the Maldives during an Investment Forum and through meetings with prominent Malaysian business leaders. Throughout the visit, President Muizzu also engaged with the Maldivian community residing in Malaysia, inaugurating essential services such as on-site National ID card and passport processing, as well as launching a dedicated Maldivian Students’ Association. Moreover, the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) conferred an Honorary Doctorate upon the President. This visit underscores the Maldives’ commitment to an independent and sovereign foreign policy, demonstrating the nation’s capacity to thrive on the international stage without over-reliance on any single country.
