During a ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of Thinadhoo’s resettlement, City Mayor Saud Ali stated that justice remains unserved for the atrocities committed during the government-led forced evacuation of the island in 1962. He emphasized that withholding the findings of the investigation submitted to the Ombudsperson’s Office is a grave injustice. However, he noted that the formal apology issued during President Nasheed’s administration provided some measure of solace to the community.
The Mayor highlighted the resilience of the people of Thinadhoo, who rebuilt their lives and the island through their own determination following the displacement. He further announced that the City Council is currently working on a film to document these historical events. Additionally, Mayor Saud expressed disappointment over the absence of high-ranking government officials at the ceremony and urged the administration to expedite planned housing and development projects essential for the city’s progress.
