The Maldives and Türkiye have officially commenced the implementation of a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), aimed at enhancing bilateral commerce. Effective from 1 August 2026, this landmark agreement is a direct result of the high-level deliberations held during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s state visit to Türkiye.
Under the provisions of this agreement, import duties on 75 specific categories of goods will be either significantly reduced or entirely exempted. This strategic move is expected to secure a substantial market for Maldivian fisheries products within Türkiye, while simultaneously facilitating the import of essential food commodities into the Maldives at more competitive prices. This initiative marks a pivotal advancement in strengthening the economic ties between the two nations and serves as a vital step toward expanding the Maldives’ export industry.
