The Local Government Authority (LGA) has declared that the President of the V. Thinadhoo Council, Shujau Ali, has lost his position in accordance with the Decentralization Act following his decision to switch political parties. Shujau, who was originally elected on a ticket from The Democrats, forfeited his seat upon joining the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). This marks the first instance in the Maldives where a council member has lost their seat under the provisions of this legislation. The LGA has now officially announced that the position of President of the Thinadhoo Council is vacant.
