Ahmed Saleem, the Member of Parliament for the Eydhafushi constituency, has been elected as the Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis. The position became vacant following the resignation of the previous Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Nazim.
In a secret ballot conducted during the Majlis session, Saleem secured the post with the support of 62 members. His opponent, MP Hussain Ziyadh representing the Vaikaradhoo constituency, received 10 votes.
Having served as a Member of Parliament continuously since 2009, Saleem is the second Deputy Speaker to be elected for the 20th Majlis. He contested and won his current seat on the People’s National Congress (PNC) ticket.
