Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam has stated that the government is undertaking significant efforts to eliminate the tariffs imposed on Maldivian tuna exported to the European market. While the United Kingdom has already granted a temporary two-year waiver on the 20% tariff, the government’s objective is to secure a permanent exemption. Furthermore, discussions are ongoing to remove the 22% to 24% tariffs currently levied by other European nations, with the ultimate goal of establishing a Free Trade Agreement.

As Maldivian fish is harvested through sustainable methods and is of premium quality, the government is prioritizing efforts to enhance its competitiveness in international markets and increase the export volume of fishery products.
