Prolonged exposure of bottled water to direct sunlight poses significant health risks. According to the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA), when plastic bottles are left in the sun, harmful chemicals and heavy metals can leach into the water. This process increases the risk of serious illnesses, including cancer. Furthermore, the degradation of water quality creates an environment conducive to the growth of pathogenic microorganisms.
In the Maldives, negligence regarding the proper handling of bottled water is evident during delivery by production companies and storage at retail outlets. Current MFDA protocols primarily focus on monitoring water from the point of production until it reaches the initial customer. However, retail shops and warehouses are not regularly monitored. Even when issues are investigated following a complaint, the regulatory response is often limited to providing advice rather than taking formal action. To safeguard public health, it is imperative that more stringent measures and enforcement mechanisms are implemented.
