The Maldives’ tuna fishery has been officially recognized as sustainable by the U.S.-based “Seafood Watch” program, earning the coveted “Best Choice” rating for the first time. This marks a historic achievement, as the Maldives becomes the first individual country in the entire Indian Ocean region to receive such a distinction. This milestone is the culmination of dedicated efforts since 2016 to demonstrate the unique and sustainable nature of Maldivian fishing practices.
This rating is expected to significantly enhance the market value of Maldivian tuna in major international markets, particularly in the United States. It will facilitate access to new markets and pave the way for increased income for local fishermen. According to the government, this recognition serves as global validation of the Maldives’ exemplary fisheries model.
