In a historic first for a single nation, the U.S.-based “Seafood Watch” has designated the Maldives’ tuna fisheries as a sustainable “Best Choice.” According to the Ministry of Fisheries, this country-specific rating is a testament to the international recognition of the Maldives’ exemplary fishing practices. This advancement is expected to secure better pricing and enhance market access for Maldivian fish products in major markets, including North America. Furthermore, alongside the existing recognition for pole-and-line fishing, the Maldivian yellowfin tuna handline fishery has also recently achieved MSC certification.
