Former Attorney General Dhiyana Saeed has expressed her support for holding the presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day, highlighting the potential benefits of such a move. Responding to remarks made by Justice Husnu Al Suood on the matter, Dhiyana asserted that the current system has failed, as the experiences of the past 15 years show it has been unable to produce a parliament capable of effectively holding the government accountable.
Dhiyana further noted that synchronizing the two elections would significantly reduce administrative costs and minimize the potential for the misuse of state resources. While the Parliament has already passed a constitutional amendment to facilitate this change, the government has scheduled a public referendum for April next year to seek the citizens’ mandate on the issue.
