President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized that holding Presidential and Parliamentary elections simultaneously is essential for national stability and progress. The President noted that the current six-month gap between the two elections frequently results in political unrest, which hinders the smooth functioning of the government.
Furthermore, His Excellency pointed out that the experience of 2024 illustrates the challenges a new administration faces when operating under a budget passed by an opposition-controlled Parliament. To ensure the full five-year term is utilized effectively and the government’s manifesto is implemented without obstruction, the President asserted that synchronizing the elections is the most equitable solution. A public referendum to decide on the unification of these elections is scheduled to be held this coming April.
