Mauritius has suspended diplomatic relations with the Maldives following disputes over the sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago. This decision by Mauritius comes in response to the Maldives’ refusal to recognize Mauritian sovereignty over Chagos and its formal objection to the ongoing process of the United Kingdom handing over the territory to Mauritius.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has consistently maintained that Chagos is historically part of the Maldives, asserting that if the territory is to be transferred, it must be handed over to its rightful claimant, the Maldives. In this regard, the Maldivian government has officially dispatched a letter to the British government requesting formal discussions on the matter. Furthermore, the current administration has rescinded the previous government’s letter of support for Mauritius and has initiated efforts to restore the Maldives’ maritime territory.
Some British politicians have also voiced their support for the Maldives’ position on this issue. Although international courts have previously ruled in favor of Mauritius regarding the ownership of Chagos, the Maldives continues to advocate for its sovereign rights over the region.
