As part of the initiative to provide sustainable ambulance services across all islands, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has completed the dispatch of 56 newly acquired ambulances to their respective destinations. The distribution process commenced on the 17th of last month. This project, aimed at ensuring sustainable emergency medical transport nationwide, was initiated following President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s visits to various administrative islands, where he met with local institutional heads to identify and address community challenges.
The project was awarded to MPL under a contractor finance model for the year 2025, with a total investment of MVR 65.3 million. Under this phase, the first 56 ambulances were brought to Malé, and their keys were officially handed over to the designated islands. Following the handover, MPL managed the logistics of transporting these vehicles to the islands starting from January 17th. Out of the 56 units brought by MPL under this program, one ambulance was allocated to the Maldives Correctional Service, while the remaining units were dispatched to islands in both northern and southern atolls. The company confirmed that the entire distribution process was successfully concluded by February 14th.
In addition to the delivery of the vehicles, MPL’s mechanical team provided technical training and information regarding the operation, maintenance, and upkeep of the ambulances to the staff of the respective hospitals and health centers. MPL further noted that they have provided assistance in diagnosing issues with some of the ambulances currently in use. To ensure the long-term sustainability and reliability of these emergency vehicles, MPL stated they are working on a framework for ongoing support. The company also revealed that discussions are underway with the Ministry of Health to formalize an agreement for the regular servicing of these ambulances and the provision of necessary spare parts.
Beyond this current fleet, the Ministry of Health previously announced that new ambulances for an additional 31 islands will be procured within this year. Furthermore, 10 specialized paramedic ambulances are expected to be introduced to facilitate paramedic services in the Greater Malé Area and other cities.
