Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, has stated that the maximum legal penalties will be enforced against those involved in drug trafficking. The Minister made this remark following a 75-year prison sentence handed down to an individual convicted of drug trafficking in Fuvahmulah. During a special operation conducted by the police in Fuvahmulah, 174 individuals linked to drug networks were apprehended, and investigations into several cases have been concluded and forwarded for prosecution.

As part of the government’s efforts to safeguard younger generations from the scourge of drugs, legislative amendments have been introduced to allow for the death penalty in such cases. According to statistics from the past year, over 500 kilograms of narcotics were seized, and numerous cases were investigated and submitted to the Prosecutor General’s Office. The Minister highlighted and commended the diligent efforts of the police and prosecutors in achieving these results.
