Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr. Aishath Rameela, has announced that efforts are being made to establish the “Farmers’ Market” at the Male’ North Harbor—initially opened for the month of Ramadan—as a permanent facility. This market was established to provide produce from various atolls at affordable prices while ensuring food security. The Minister highlighted that the market offers “GAP-certified” (Maldives Good Agricultural Practices) produce, free from harmful chemicals, sourced from islands such as Sh. Goidhoo. The government aims to certify agricultural produce from more islands to guarantee safe food for the public. Current efforts, in collaboration with MPL, focus on securing a permanent location for the market before the conclusion of Ramadan.
