Renowned Film Director Ahmed Nimal Passes Away

The celebrated Maldivian film director, Ahmed Nimal, has passed away while undergoing treatment following a stroke. He breathed his last early this morning. Nimal was admitted to IGMH on December 31st last year after suffering a stroke. Reports indicate that the 62-year-old filmmaker experienced the stroke while riding his motorcycle in Male’. According to eyewitnesses, he managed to bring the vehicle to a stop before collapsing.

Ahmed Nimal was a distinguished figure in the Maldivian film industry, leaving behind an enduring legacy. His career in cinema began in 1984 as an actor in Easa Shareef’s film “Nufooze.” However, it was the 1993 film “City”—which he wrote, directed, and starred in—that cemented his status as a household name, becoming one of the most popular films in Maldivian history. His portfolio includes several critically acclaimed and commercially successful films such as “Zalzalaa,” “Yoosuf,” and “Niuma.” In recognition of his invaluable contributions to the arts, the government honored him with the National Award of Encouragement in 1991.
